    April 02, 2005

"I note the step that has been taken in the right direction now that Parliamentary elections have been held in Zimbabwe," says Minister of Foreign Affairs Laila Freivalds.

"At the same time, I regret the obstacles that the government has placed in the way of a free and democratic election process. There is, for example, reason to be concerned about the electoral fraud that the opposition says has taken place.

"I will call on the Government of Zimbabwe to ensure that respect for human rights is re-established in the country as soon as possible. This is imperative if the country is to regain its international reputation. Sweden will continue to follow developments in this area closely", says Laila Freivalds.
