Election Update No.3
Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN)
March 11, 2005
As there are
only 20 days to go the next election on the 31st of March 2005,
the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has established a national multi-party
political liaison committee that will deal with conflict resolution
among the contesting parties in this year's parliamentarian
elections. The commission will also adjudicate on disputes and is
entrusted with the responsibility for conciliation and mediation
upon conflict management panels.
In Southern
Africa such countries as South Africa, Mozambique and Botswana have
already established their liaison committees. This has resulted
in more conflicts related to elections being resolved faster before
being taken to the Electoral Courts especially for those that are
complex and difficulty to resolve.
This committee
is comprised of 5 members of all the participating parties and seventeen
independent candidates. ZESN as a civic organization involved in
the electoral process welcomes and commends this move by ZEC and
we hope that this committee will also be established at local and
regional levels.
ZESN has welcomed
this move and hopes that it will enhance the integrity of the election
process and prevent conflicts as all the political parties are involved
and are contributing to the decisions of the committee.
The commission
will also adjudicate on disputes and is entrusted with the responsibility
for conciliation and mediation upon conflict management panels.
It is hoped
that this move by political parties to interact with each other
and solve their disputes own their own and will promote a culture
of tolerance among the political parties their supporters.
We the establishment
of Electoral Court, hope election disputes will be dealt with expeditiously.
