ESC
Ref. No.: ESC/PR/9
This Notice was published in The Herald, January 19, 2005
Voter’s roll for 2005
Parliamentary Elections will be open for inspection by the public from
17th to 30th January, 2005. The Electoral Supervisory
Commission will deploy Monitors to Supervise the Inspection of the Voter’s
Roll exercise.
In accordance with
the Constitution of Zimbabwe, Parliamentary Elections shall be held every
five [5] years. His Excellency, the President Cde R.G. Mugabe pronounced
that the 2005 elections will be in March. The General Elections will be
held in all the 120 constituencies throughout the country.
The inspection of
the Voter’s Roll is a continuous exercise and people can carry out inspections
at the district and provincial offices of the Registrar-General during
normal business hours. In the current exercise, the Registrar-General
of Elections has set up 5 173 inspection centres throughout the country.
These will be publicised by the Registrar-General in the local press.
The electorate is
reminded that the Inspection of the Voter’s Roll is a vital component
of the electoral process. Prospective voters should remember that only
people who are registered as voters and whose names appear on the voter’s
roll will be allowed to vote. A number of activities take place at inspection
centres. First, voters check if their names are on the voter’s roll and
if they are not, they can register there and then. If they are registered
and there are any errors, they have an opportunity to correct their details
on the roll. Secondly, voters who have moved to another constituency should
notify the presiding officer so that they are transferred to the new constituency.
Thirdly, people who have not registered as voters have an opportunity
to do so close to their homes. People should take their national Ids or
valid Zimbabwean passports to verify their details on the voter’s roll.
You are an eligible voter when you turn 18.
The ESC Reminds the
electorate and political parties that the inspection of the voter’s roll
offers the opportunity to clean up and update the voter’s roll.
To supervise the inspection
exercise, the Electoral Supervisory Commission will deploy Monitors in
all the inspection centres. The Electoral Supervisory Commission (ESC)
encourages all eligible voters to go and inspect the voter’s roll.
