Nullification of poll results
Transparency International Zimbabwe (TI-Z)
January 17, 2003

Transparency International Zimbabwe (TI-Z) welcomes the two verdicts nullifying the 2000 Parliamentary election results for the Gokwe North and East constituencies. It has been noted in the judgments delivered that the results have been cancelled for corrupt practices carried out by the candidates' election agents, with their knowledge and approval.

We appreciate the fact that the High Court has carried out its duties without undue political interference. We hope that the Supreme Court will do the same. We look forward to a speedy resolution of the pending appeals to the Supreme Court by the election candidates. It is important that these appeals be disposed of to enable the constituents of the relevant areas to be democratically represented in the Legislature.

Of major concern to us is the high incidence of contested election results, that are still pending in the High Court. 36 seats have so far been contested, with 12 retained by Zanu PF, and 6 nullified by the High Court. We call upon the authorities and contesting parties to ensure that future elections are carried out in a transparent and corruption-free manner. We also call on supporters to accept the Court's judgments, and exercise political maturity in their campaigns in future. The law must be allowed to take its course in the fair determination of election results.
