  • Special Appeal to the Uniformed Forces
    Zimbabwe Liberators’ Platform
    March 08, 2002

Zimbabwe Liberators Platform (ZLP) is a registered non-partisan, non-governmental organisation formed by genuine war veterans whose core business is to advocate for peace, democracy, good governance and development.

    We, the genuine war veterans:

    • Recognizing that a sizeable number of the uniformed forces are war veterans, which binds us together as former liberation war fighters.
    • Realising the immense and critical role they played to liberate this country.
    • Appreciating their personal sacrifices during the liberation struggle.
    • Commending the uniformed forces for the sterling role they have played and the good name they have earned Zimbabwe during several UN peace-keeping/making missions around the world eg ZNA in Somalia, Angola and DRC and the ZRP in Angola and Kosovo.
    • Acknowledging that despite logistical and financial constraints caused by underfunding and neglect, they have remained the pillar of stability, making Zimbabwe one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the region.
    • Remind the uniformed forces not to lose sight of or betray the original ideals and values of the liberation struggle, which we share and for which many have laid down their lives. We should not forget that some of our comrades lost limbs while others were not even accorded decent burial.

As the nation approaches presidential elections, Zimbabwe faces an unprecedented political, economic and social crisis which calls for a solution from everybody. It is against this background that the ZLP would like to appeal to the uniformed forces:

    • To continue with the culture of serving the people tirelessly as they have always done since the days of the liberation struggle.
    • Not to allow themselves to be separated from the very people they serve. The people’s interests are paramount.
    • Not to be swayed by hefty salary increments conveniently awarded prior to crucial elections. We recognize that these salary increments are well deserved, although they were awarded too late to compensate for the ever rising inflation. Unformed forces suffer the same cost of living problems like everyone else. It should be remembered that their salaries come from the taxpayers, not from political parties or individuals.
    • To uphold the Constitution of Zimbabwe and the democratic principles they fought for.
    • To work tirelessly to restore the public respect and image of war veterans lost through the actions of fake and rogue war veterans.
    • To realize that there is life after elections. Political parties and leaders come and go but the people and the state remain.
    • To remain professional, fair and serve as an anchor of stability during these trying times.
