Important note for Harare residents - VOTE IN YOUR WARD AND YOUR CONSTITUENCY

    • To be able to vote for: President, Mayor and your Ward Counsellor you MUST vote at a polling station in your ward and in your constituency. If you do not know which ward you live in, telephone Mrs Tsoka on 797107 during working hours to get this information.
    • If you vote outside your ward, even though you are within your constituency, you can only vote for the President.
    • NOTE: you can only vote for the President from within the constituency in which you registered.

Important note on Harare wards in which constituency boundaries overlap

Be warned that counstituency boundaries overlap in certain wards. That is: parts of more than one constituency extend into the ward.

The implication of this is that you may find yourself voting at a polling station in your ward that is NOT in your constituency. Since you can only vote for the President from within your own constituency, this is very serious.

You do not want to lose the opportunity to vote for the President!.

Discussions are still in progress with the Registrar-General to determine how this anomoly will be handled on election weekend. Here are two possible options:

    • The voters' rolls for all overlapping constituencies in a ward, must be present at the polling stations in these wards.
    • Ensure that a voter's hands are not marked with fraud ink until both ward and constituency rolls have been checked and the voter's name has been found present (this is not the current arrangement - see details of how voting will be conducted at polling stations in Harare, below).

If you live in the wards detailed below, you will need to be especially careful which polling station you select when you go to vote on March 9/10, 2002.

    • Ward 1 - Glen View, Glen Norah, Mbare East and Harare South overlap
    • Ward 2 - Hatfield, Harare South and Harare Central overlap
    • Ward 6 - Harare Central and Harare South overlap
    • Ward 8 - Harare Central, Harare East and Harare North overlap
    • Ward 11 - Mbare West, Kambazuma, Mbare East and Harare Central overlap
    • Ward 15 - Dzivarasekwa and Kambazuma overlap
    • Ward 17 - Harare Central and Harare North overlap
    • Ward 22 - Hatfield and Harare South overlap
    • Ward 23 - Mbare East and Mbare West overlap

We will update you as more information and advice becomes available.

Efforts are being made to commission maps from the Surveyor General which display both ward boundaries and constituency boundaries.

In the meantime you are urged to MOBILISE in your communities:

    • Visit Town House or 1 Drummond Chaplin Ave, Milton Park or CHRA's Advocacy Centre, 11 Armagh Avenue, Eastlea to view a City of Harare ward map
    • Purchase a ward map from Electra House in Samora Machel Ave and share it with people in your neighbourhood, gym, district office, post office, factory, doctor's surgery, clinic, shop, garage
    • Contact your ward counsellor candidate for more information

Current information on how voting will be conducted at polling stations in Harare -
remember that everything is subject to change without notice!

In Harare, there will be three ballot papers. This is how the voting procedure will take place:

    • You will enter the polling station, and they will check your hands to ensure you have not already voted.
    • They will check your name on the Ward Voters' Roll.
    • You will dip your hands in the fraud ink.
    • You will collect one ballot paper for the mayoral vote, and one for the councillor vote.
    • They will check your name on the Constituency Voters' Roll.
    • You will collect your Presidential ballot paper.
    • Proceed to the polling booths, and vote according to your wishes - your vote is secret.
    • Place your ballot papers in the correct ballot boxes (these boxes will be colour coded, but unfortunately not the ballot papers)
      - Presidential paper in the Presidential box,
      - Mayoral paper in the Mayoral box, and
      - Council paper in the Council box.

    Important Note:
Please remember not to shake hands with anyone prior to voting. You do not want to lose your opportunity to vote by having your hands stained by fraud ink inadvertently.

Should you encounter any difficulties in voting make sure to have these documented by a legitimate polling agent.
