National Executive members visits the Secretary General at Whawha
prison
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
October 05, 2012
The Zimbabwe National Students Union, NEC Members paid a visit to
the Secretary General Tryvine Musokeri at Whawha prison. In Gweru
on the 5th of October. The ZINASU leadership was accompanied by
18 students from MSU to give solidarity to the Secretary General
who is languishing
at Whawha prison. The secretary general was arrested on the 26th
of September over unclear political allegations. His arrest reflects
clear evidence of the suppression of academic justice that is rife
in Zimbabwe. The determined and committed students of Zimbabwe in
collaboration with the ZINASU leadership have joined hands in arming
against the government of Zimbabwe and particularly the ministry
of higher and tertiary education which is responsible for subjugating
the fundamental academic freedoms.
It is now 9
days since the arrest of the Secretary General, the Midlands province
students expressed a deep-rooted concern over the abuse of power
by the responsible government authorities to subvert the voice of
student leaders. However the president Pride Mkono could not attend
the visit because he was attending a meeting in Harare. The acting
President Believe Tevera promised the students that ZINASU will
not rest until student demands are fulfilled. He further stated
that the elimination of leaders is nothing, for the cause remains.
On the 15th of October ZINASU is inviting interested civic society
and students to attend the "Free Tryvine Campaign".
Tryvine is appearing
in court on the 15th and we expect students across the country to
attend in protest against the government abuse of human rights "injure
one injure all". the ZINASU delegation proceeded to meet the
MSU students at the MSU main campus and the NEC members promised
the students that they will work with the SRC , together with the
students to fight academic repression that is rampant at MSU and
to ensure that all born fiend students are allowed to register.
On a sad note the ZINASU and its entirety wishes to express its
profound condolences massage to the Nation over an untimely departure
of the Minister of Higher and Tertiary education S Mudenge, may
his soul rest in eternal peace. How ever ZINASU hopes that the next
minister to come will uphold the academic freedoms.
