SCMZ commemorates International Women's Day
Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe (SCMZ)
March 08, 2012

Who can find a virtuous woman? Her price is far above rubies.
Proverbs 31:10

The Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe (SCMZ) stands in solidarity with virtuous and courageous women fighting for their space in the different parts of the world, as we celebrate the International Women's Day on the 8th of March under the theme: Empower Rural Women - End Hunger and Poverty. This day comes as an important day for everyone globally to recognise applaud women's achievements as well as highlighting gender inequalities and issues within our communities.

As the world commemorate this day, SCMZ would like to pay special tribute to all women in Zimbabwe and the world over who have remained resolute regardless of the harassment, arrests and even torture they have endured for peaceful expression of their desire to be recognized as equal beings. Everything that we have witnessed during the past years, with the uprisings in the Arab world and elsewhere, confirms our priority that we need to urgently and systematically advocate for and open up participation, opportunity and choices for all human beings, women and men, young and old. We need to address inequality, for we believe that every human being should be able to shape their own futures and the futures of their countries, enjoy a decent standard of living, and live in peace and dignity.

As SCMZ we would like to remind the Zimbabwean government and other Governments the world over, that appending signatures to various Treaties and Conventions is not an end in itself, it is high time Governments begin to honour these treaties and make full use of the treaties and tools that many resources have been committed towards.

We also want to applaud all female students in various institutions around Zimbabwe for their comradeship and perseverance in pursuant of their studies regardless of the economic hardships faced. We salute you and pray that the good Lord shall endow you with His strength and grace to continue in your determination. To this effect SCMZ has lined-up various activities throughout the country to award young women of valour at tertiary institutions an unfettered platform to commemorate this important day in pomp and style. We urge all progressive organisations to continue championing the good cause of women empowerment and encourage others to listen and support women in an effort to eradicate poverty and hunger to achieve lasting peace and sustainable development for the betterment of our communities and generations to come.
