    February 15, 2012

Former ZINASU student leader, Welcome Zimuto and five civic society activists, Munyaradzi Gwisai, Hopewell Gumbo, Antoneta Choto, Tatenda Mombeyarara and Edson Chakuma appeared before a Harare Regional Magistrate, today the 15th of February facing charges of Conspiracy to commit public violence as defined in section 188 as read with section 36 of the Criminal Law (codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23] stemming from a members' meeting they had on February 19 last year.

When the case was adjourned early this month, the defence council had applied for discharge at the end of the state's case. This application was today dismissed because the magistrate determined that there was prima facie evidence, that is evidence that is sufficient to raise a presumption of fact or to establish the fact in question unless rebutted. The trial was adjourned to the 27th of February to allow the defence to prepare for the trial.

Student solidarity trust continues to advocate for justice and the need for the wheels of justice to turn faster since justice delayed is justice denied. It also seeks freedom of association and expression for students and the public at large which these activists are being persecuted for.
