Five
Masvingo activists finally released
Students
Solidarity Trust
February 07, 2012
After spending five days in conditions which even the Ministry of
Justice and the Zimbabwean government admit are inhumane in Masvingo
remand prison, Five Masvingo activists, Brighton Ramusi, Prosper
Tiringindi, Zivanai Muzorodzi, Godfrey Kurauone and Brian Chimwayi
appeared in court today before a Masvingo Magistrate and were released
on free bail. They are facing charges of public violence emanating
from challenging failure by Masvingo Polytechnic authorities to
refund students who enrolled for a tourism program that suffered
a still birth. After initially advertising the introduction of this
department and accepting payment from students, the authorities
have now made an about turn by scrapping plans to have the department
and seem to be uninterested in refunding the students.
The five were
remanded to the 22nd of February.
Liquidity is
a serious challenge for many Zimbabweans. This includes the unsuspecting
parents and guardians of the students who were duped by the Polytechnic.
The Students Solidarity Trust continues to urge authorities to safeguard
students' rights by ensuring that there are recourse mechanisms
for those who will have been victimized in this way. The ministry
of higher and tertiary education must make a statement condemning
such activities and reign in on these errant administrators.
