Students union launches deposit your voice campaign
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)

We the students
of all tertiary institutions in Zimbabwe
Worried with
the reluctance of the government to substantially fund education,
Concerned with
the number of our fellow talented students who are either dropping
out or failing to enroll at institutions of higher learning,
Offended by
the number of students who completed their studies but cannot access
certificates because of outstanding fees,
Further offended
by the inadequacies, poor and irresponsible management of the accommodation
service at the colleges
Disturbed with
the way students are engaging in the options of last resort i.e.
prostitution, poorly paid manual labor, political servitude in a
desperate bid to survive
Having realized
that higher education has fallen victim to policy discord necessitated
by lack of a clear and comprehensive National Education policy owing
to parochial partisan interests of the parties in the chaotic inclusive
government,
Noting that
the shambolic cadetship scheme is unsustainable, selective, insufficient
and repressive,
Troubled with
the continued support for the costly and partisan Presidential Scholarship
using national resources
Desirous of
a just, equitable and robust education sector in Zimbabwe
Aware that our
government has capacity to revive full funding for all students
We hereby launch
this National Campaign, the Deposit Your Voice Campaign which seeks
to afford the students and the nation at large an opportunity to
speak out and demand a rethink in the discourse of the state of
higher education in the country. This will be achieved through the
collection and collation of various voices coming out from parents,
students, workers, churches, media practitioners, academics, rights
activists and the broader spectrum through various means of communication.
The campaign
does not end at the point of collecting the voices; rather, it begins
then, as the voices should be deposited to the relevant Ministries
and government functionaries on daily and weekly basis. The campaign
will take 45 days.
The Students Union expects the government to respond to these various
voices within 14 working days after the completion of the campaign
process, failure of which will attract corrective measures from
the disgruntled students and various societies of Zimbabwe.
