Ruling for five Masvingo students postponed
Students Solidarity Trust
September 03, 2011

Five Masvingo activists appeared before a Masvingo Magistrate, yesterday the 2nd of September facing charges of public indecency following a demonstration against exorbitant tuition.

The five, Joshua Chinyere, Zivanai Muzorodzi, Godfrey Kurauone, Arnold Batsirai and Brighton Ramusi had their ruling postponed to the 5th of September because the State has not yet finished the defense outline.

In another case, the disciplinary hearing for three Bindura University students, Trevor Chamba, Ian Makone and David Kuipa also took place yesterday. Accusations against them are that they were on the forefront of inciting other students into wrongful acts. It is alleged that on the day in question they were singing in the examination room whilst they were addressing unregistered students who had been denied the opportunity to write examinations. Their actions are said to be in violation of the rules of Students Conduct and disciplinary ordinance of 2001 paragraphs 1:3, 1:4, 3.1.5 and 3:2.1. All charges against them were dropped but they are now on a last warning.

Meanwhile in yet another case in Gweru, two Midlands State University activists appeared yesterday before a Gweru Magistrate. The two activists are facing charges of public indecency and assault. The two, Pride Mkono and Ezekiel Marimo have been remanded to the 7th of September.

Also in Gweru, nine activists were briefly arrested and then released into the custody of their lawyers on Thursday, the 1st of September, facing charges of assault, undermining police authority and disorderly conduct. They have been remanded to the 5th of September.

The Students Solidarity Trust notes with concern this spate of harassment by the police and prosecutors. In most instances, charges brought against these students have failed to stick due to lack of evidence. The Trust continues to encourage the state institutions involved in this harassment to stop forthwith. Zimbabwe's taxes should be better spent in more important areas such as infrastructure development and subsidizing the health and education of citizens rather than in wild goose chases.
