Five Masvingo students discharged
Students Solidarity Trust
July 14, 2011

Five Masvingo students have been discharged of all charges today Thursday the 14th of July. This was after their lawyer had applied for discharge a fortnight ago citing reasons that the case lacked enough evidence for it to continue. The five Zivanai Muzorodzi, Arnold Batirai, Gamuchirai Mukura,Godfrey Kurauone and Brighton Ramusi were facing charges of malicious damage to property and assault following a demonstration against the barring of students who had not paid fees from writing exams in October last year.

Despite the discharge, students' rights nationwide continue to be trampled upon, Hence the Students Solidarity Trust continues to lobby for the freedom of expression to be respected in Zimbabwe. It is imperative for the Government of National Unity to remain accountable, transparent and constantly consult with all stakeholders for a truly democratic Zimbabwe to be attained. The judicial process should not be abused by a few in the government who are enemies of democracy. Instead of justice being done and being seen to be done, justice is being throttled by a small section of cronies who are unhappy with the progress of Zimbabwe on an irreversible path to pluralism.
