ZINASU constitutes the National Transitional Caretaker Council (NTCC)
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
June 17, 2011

Pursuant to the proclamation by the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) which effected the dissolution of factional national executive councils and substituted them by a National Transitional Caretaker Council (NTCC), to pave way for the Unity Bi-Annual Congress, the Co-Chairpersons of the Council take this opportunity to announce the following as other members of the NTCC:

Tafadzwa Kutya, Noel Gotora, Welcome Zimuto, Rangarirai Muchawaya, Grant Tabvurei, Tendai Katai, Charles Chinyanya and Kundai Chambara. The other 4 members will be announced in due course. The Council will meet for the first time on Monday the 20th of June 2011 to refine the roadmap and come up with concrete action plans aimed at achieving the broader goal of lasting Unity. The meeting will also assign them to their respective portfolio committees.

The above eight members have been appointed equitably from both factions on the basis of their effectiveness and passion in achieving lasting unity in ZINASU. The designation of these NTCC members has heralded the beginning of the journey towards the National Unity Bi- Annual Congress penciled for the 26th to the 29th of August 2011 where all structures of ZINASU will convene to achieve lasting unity, re-brand the Union and revive its vibrancy.

Further ZINASU wishes to clarify that general regulations on the imminent Congress are that no person who has worked or served in the two parallel executives will be allowed to contest any position in ZINASU at Congress and at every level. Equally, none of the aforementioned members will be permitted to work in the secretariat of ZINASU for the next 5 years. This will ensure a smooth transition of power from this generation to the emerging younger generation of students with fresh ideas and the wherewithal to drive the union in the right direction, free of factional manipulation.

We take this opportunity to alert the world that the NTCC will not outlive the Bi-Annual Congress but is a transitional temporary measure meant to clear the way for sanity to rein in ZINASU and bury chaos and factionalism which has threatened the whole fabric of the Union. Indeed, the founders and former students' leaders of ZINASU as well as its friends in the workers movement and other organizations have not been celebrating the past two years of infighting and misguided activism anchored at scoring factional goals.

We note that ZINASU has been struggling from this chaos for the past 2 years and there is every need to heal the troubled Union. While there is consensus from among all the former executive council members on the measures that we have taken, the enemies of ZINASU have sharpened their sword to try to derail the noble cause of unity. These manifests in some organizations and individuals who have resorted to creating counter and pseudo propaganda emails which publish falsehoods using names of former executive council members to depict them as enemies of unity. Nothing can be further from the truth as those pseudo emails are easily identified by their lack of physical office address, showing clearly that it is the work of sworn enemies of ZINASU who have no respect for young people and their ability to preside over change and transitions in their own movement.

Notwithstanding that, we strongly hold that ZINASU will inevitably emerge as the powerful youth organization in Zimbabwe if we all take the giant step to recognize and assist the NTCC in its implementation of this roadmap towards lasting unity. The urgency of reconstructing the union institution, repairing Union relations, realizing lost vibrancy, reviving students' confidence and revitalizing the role of female students in ZINASU is now.

Finally, ZINASU thanks all former students' leaders and friends and partners who have expressed willingness to assist the students Union to smoothly administer this transition and overcome challenges that come along with it.
