ZANU PF Mbare militia be warned
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 30, 2011

Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) is deeply disturbed by the disgraceful acts of political violence being perpetrated with impunity by some ZANU PF ruffians against innocent and disadvantaged citizens in Mbare. Mbare residents have endured gross human rights violations including illegal evictions, assault and extra-judicial executions at the hands of blood thirsty ZANU PF militia over the past years. The state has been mum despite the numerous calls for help that have come from the victims in Zimbabwe's oldest suburb.

ZANU PF has created a safe haven for all the criminal elements in Mbare under different banners including Chipangano and Monomotapa. The notorious militia groups were heavily involved in cold blood murders and torture during the June 2008 runoff and have never looked back. Vendors have also been victims of these criminal militias who have looted their stocks and forced them to attend meaningless ZANU PF gatherings.

ZINASU calls upon the state to swiftly intervene to save the humanitarian crisis in Mbare before more lives are lost. Mbare residents deserve to be protected by the state like any other citizens. Zimbabwe is a signatory of the African Charter on People and Human Rights which condemns all forms of torture and victimization. The state is negating its fundamental obligations of protecting and respecting citizens. ZINASU President Obert Masaraure has warned both the state and the perpetrators of violence to either end the violence or face the wrath of the Students' Union.

ZANU PF should now come to the realization that victimization and harassment of political opponents can never assist in their quest to transform their waning political fortunes. Zimbabweans have refused to be cowed by violence and remained steadfast since 2000 rejecting ZANU PF candidates.

The students of Zimbabwe shall not watch helplessly as their kith and kin suffer at the hands of the scoundrels in Mbare. If the state fails to put an end to the chaos in Mbare, the students shall put an end to the existence of the current State. State institutions have failed dismally to execute their national mandate and have chosen to pursue parochial partisan interests.

Meanwhile Masvingo Polytechnic has allowed all students to register with HEXCO with or without paying fees, Mutare Poly has extended the dead line for registration and other colleges are still to comply with ZINASU instruction on registration which is in line with national policy. ZINASU demands that all students be allowed to register and eventually write exams with or without paying fees at all Polytechnics.
