Catastrophe in Zimbabwe Polytechnic colleges
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 26, 2011

Students wishing to write examinations at Polytechnic Colleges across the country are faced with a bleak future after authorities announced that registration for HEXCO examinations closes on 27 May 2011. Students with fees arrears are being barred from registering with HEXCO a condition that has left the majority of students stranded.

Fees at Polytechnics range from US$600-US$1200 per year which is way beyond the reach of many students. Students coming from Industrial attachment are the most affected as they are expected to pay full tuition for the year they were on attachment and the full fees for this term. HEXCO is charging US$10 per subject and most students on average write 7 subjects.

Speaking to the ZINASU Information department SRC leaders from all the polytechnics have condemned the administrators for failing to respect the right to education for students and called upon ZINASU to urgently intervene. Masvingo Polytechnic SRC president Absai Vasivenyu declared that students at his institution will not hesitate to repeat what they did last year when they were confronted with the same crisis. Students at Masvingo Poly last year physically assaulted the Principal at that Institution who latter allowed all students to register over the weekend of 29 -30 May 2010 without paying fees.

ZINASU has instructed Polytechnic Administrators to allow students to register for HEXCO without full payment of fees since HEXCO is an independent entity from their troubled Institutions. In a communique distributed to all polytechnics ZINASU President Obert Masaraure declared a jihad to all authorities if a single student is barred from registering and eventually writing exams.

ZINASU calls for the reintroduction of the loan and grant scheme as a lasting solution to the challenge of student funding.
