Three
Masvingo students released from remand
Students Solidarity Trust
May 18, 2011
Three Masvingo
polytechnic students were this afternoon released from remand. The
three, Monalisa Katsaruware, Desire Chikwanda and Nyasha Chaminuka
appeared at the Masvingo Magistrates Court this morning facing charges
of undermining or insulting the office of the President. The students
were arrested
on campus in possession of and watching an alleged subversive two
hour long video clip depicting President Mugabe being shot at by
the military in a war-like simulation. They were arrested for contravening
Section 33 of Subsection 2 Paragraph A proviso 1 of the Criminal
Law Codification and Reform Act 9:23. If convicted the students
are facing a fine not exceeding level 6 that is a fine not exceeding
USD50, or imprisonment not exceeding 1 year or both.
Meanwhile the court ruled that they shall be communicated to by
way of summons, a sign that the persecution of the students has
not yet ended.
The Students Solidarity Trust (SST) is concerned over the decay
of the countries justice delivery system and its abuse by those
who continue to persecute students and other Zimbabweans through
frivolous prosecutions. The justice delivery system must not be
held to ransom by individuals pursuing personal agendas. The Student
Solidarity Trust appeals to relevant authorities to set up proper
administrative structures which will assist in the smooth running
of the courts, and deliver justice to the population of Zimbabwe.
