College authorities join hands with ZINASU
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 17, 2011
In a welcome
development; authorities at Harare Polytechnic made a complete turnaround
from their usual parochial attitude to disassociate with the Zimbabwe
National Students Union and reiterated the nobleness of the Union's
call for the re-introduction of the Loans and Grants scheme.
In a meeting
held today 17 May 2011 from 1000hrs to 1400hrs at Harare Polytechnic
between the ZINASU executive led by the President Obert Masaraure;
the acting Principal of Harare Polytechnic Engineer T. Madondo and
the Dean of Students reiterated that the scheme should be reintroduced
so that higher education can became more accessible to all and that
the quality of service should improve. "Actually with loans
and grants our administrative burden would be reduced as students'
welfare would be well covered. We really support your initiative
to have it reintroduced" said the dean of students. ZINASU
is set to address a General Meeting with students at the same Institution
on Monday the 23rd of May as part of its Fresh Start Campaign launched
last Friday in Masvingo. After the meeting with authorities the
Leadership later met with the SRC members and discussed various
issues and the students made it clear that they did not want to
have politicians meddling in their affairs.
Government stopped
the scheme in 2006 and introduced the cadetship scheme which the
Union has equaled to slavery since it inhibits graduates the opportunity
to seek new horizons of knowledge by bonding them to a government
that is unable to create employment. The scheme also has negative
effects on the welfare of students as they have to sustain themselves
from their personal pockets. As a union we believe that higher education
serves the nation and therefore it is the duty of the government
to craft policies that enhances its growth and the loan and grant
scheme is one such policy. It is common knowledge that world over
Public Private sector partnerships are important for development.
