ZINASU one step ahead
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 13, 2011
The Ministry
of Higher and Tertiary Education has finally hearkened to the rumbles
and grumbles of the students' community as the exams that
students in State universities are going through at the moment did
not bar those with arrears from writing exams.
Midlands State
University is almost finishing its exams, whilst the Great Zimbabwe
University (GZU) and the National
University of Science and Technology (NUST) are to commence
exams on Monday the 16th of May 2011. The ministry wrote a memo
to all Vice-Chancellors ordering them not to sake away students
for failure to pay but withhold results.
The GZU Secretary
General Prosper Tiringindi confirmed that all students will be entitled
to write exams and said it is one thing that they as institutional
leaders through ZINASU have managed to put necessary pressure on
the government.
The same directive
was sent to all colleges by the Director of Manpower Planning Dewa
on the 5th of January this year ordering them not to chase away
students who do not have the ability to pay for their fees.
The ZINASU President
Obert Masaraure said,' The hurdle left on this issue is to
encourage the students' community to demand for the revival
of the loan and grant scheme despite their political differences.'
In light of this ZINASU has embarked on a full scale campaign for
the revival of loans and grants.
Meanwhile, ZINASU
warns the three political parties in the GNU
in strong terms to adhere to the Global
Political Agreement provisions. The people of Zimbabwe never
voted for a power sharing arrangement, so the least they can expect
from an unelected government is to fulfill the promises as outlined
in black and white by the GPA.
