Disability Arts Festival
Students Solidarity Trust
March 30, 2011

Following recommendations from a Students Solidarity Trust (SST) commissioned study compiled by the Disability Resource Centre (DRC) of the University of Zimbabwe (UZ); the department of theatre arts at UZ shall be hosting a four day long disability arts festival open to the public. The festival to be held from 5-8 April 2011 at UZ Beit Hall and Greens Open Area shall feature performances and academic presentations from gender, disability, religious, cultural and human rights activists and researchers. The theme of the festival reads "Navigating and re-negotiating marginality: artistic and cultural dimensions.

The study entitled "A survey of challenges, opportunities and threats faced by students with disabilities in the post-independent era in Zimbabwe" recommended among other things that there should be establishment of mechanisms for dissemination of information about disabilities to students, university authorities, policy makers, civil society and the donor community. The partnership by UZ Theatre Arts Department, DRC and SST in facilitating the hosting of the Disability Arts Festival is yet another initiative towards implementation of the recommendations of the study.

Invitations have been extended to academics, artists, civil society, media, corporate world, donor community, parliamentarians and the public to participate in the festival. Some of the participants will also include members of the approximately 12500 UZ students' population and lecturers. Participants, artists and civil society, corporate world and media organizations who pledge to support the festival or make presentations and performances have been encouraged to liaise with UZ department of theatre arts, DRC and SST.
