The Student
Solidarity Trust today had a follow-up meeting with the Parliamentary
Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, Science and Technology
to give oral evidence on issues that are negatively affecting the
countries institutions of higher and tertiary education following
an initial meeting held in January 2011. The Committee had set 7th
March 2011 as the day for it to collect oral evidence from stakeholders
in the education sector. The issues discussed ranged from the funding
of students through a proposed multi-donor fund to boost the sector.
Limited funding of the sector is the root cause of most of the viability
challenges faced by institutions of higher learning. Other issues
discussed involved the restriction of operations of Student Representative
Councils (SRCs), the closed halls of residence at University
of Zimbabwe and the victimizations of student activists. Please
find attached a copy of the written submission made to Parliamentary
Portfolio Committee on Higher Education Science and Technology.
