Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) hikes tuition
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
March 01, 2011
Bindura University of
Science Education (BUSE) hiked its tuition fees by an unexplained
US$50 as the institution opened its doors for the second semester
yesterday. The SRC President Tanaka Gavaza said, 'The move
by the institution is said to have been approved by the previous
SRC, however we shall try to reverse the decision by the university
authorities.' The BUSE SRC was formally inaugurated into office
last week on Thursday 24 February 2011 where members of the state
security and police details tried to inculcate a culture of fear
but to no avail as the student leaders refused to bow down to the
threats.
In a bid to get what
is really happening with increases in tuition in various state universities
the National University of Science and Technology SRC Acting President
Malvin Musvipo claims that the Student Affairs department at NUST
informed him that it was an order from the Ministry of Higher Education
to increase tuition. It is disturbing news to the students'
community as majority of the students are still struggling to raise
the fees, but the government of Zimbabwe sees it prudent to increase
tuition when they are reluctant to increase salaries for those in
the public service.
ZINASU congratulates
the newly elected Kwekwe Polytechnic SRC led by John Mahwebo who
has been re-elected after successfully leading the Kwekwe students
the previous academic year. The ZINASU President Obert Masaraure
is expected to be visiting Kwekwe Polytechnic students this week
to congratulate the new SRC and to map the way forward on issues
bedeviling the students of this institution.
Meanwhile, ZINASU
condemns in strong terms the torture
and harassment that fellow comrades who were arrested with Gwisai,
Gumbo and the Union's Deputy Secretary General Welcome Zimuto
are being subjected to. These comrades have no case to answer and
it is high time that ZANU-PF should cease abusing the national broadcaster
(ZBC) in peddling malicious propaganda.
