ZINASU joins the campaign against violence targeting women
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
December 04, 2010
The Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU) has joined hands with the people
of Zimbabwe and the world at large in condemning violence against
women. Speaking at the launch of the TOGETHER AGAINST POLITICAL
VIOLENCE, a campaign that seeks among other things to knock into
the regional histories in tackling the plague of political violence
was the ZINASU Gender and Advocacy secretary Tendai Katai, together
with the NCA
Chairperson Lovemore Madhuku, ZCTU
President Lovemore Matombo.
The campaign
launched just before Zimbabwe for yet another election seek to achieve
its goals through raising awareness, building support structures,
rehabilitate both the victims as well as the perpetrators as well
as capacitating women and communities at large to deal with the
scourge at two levels: prevention and support for victims.
The campaign
is a brainchild of the Research
and Advocacy Unit (RAU) report depicting the several of human
rights violations perpetrated against the female membership of the
NCA between the years 2000 to 2008. According to the report 75%
women reported that they had been active political activists. 41
% of these reported being arrested, with 29% having been arrested
twice. 35% of those arrested were intimidated during arrest, whilst
46% reported that the worst treatment came from police officers.
9% reported having their young children being detained with them.
Speaking at
the launch of the campaign the ZINASU Gender secretary defined the
respect for human life and human liberty as key factors shaping
the art of good governance and the protection of common good from
directionless zeal of fanatics as fundamental to human development.
Cde Tendai reminded the world of the violence against the student
of Zimbabwe epitomized by the brutality death of Batanai Hadzizi
and emphasized that in most cases of such violations security agents
played a part directly or did not act to put a halt to such atrocities.
ZINASU believes
that there can never be a breakdown of law and order that can surpus
the connivance of governing personalities who encourage fanaticism.
The use of such fanatics whose open contempt for order and human
life is beyond question and have left the struggle for a democratic
Zimbabwe marred and mirrored by skeletons and scars.Cde Katai said
ZINASU hoped that as we trudge towards another election Zimbabweans
must not be nerved by such elements whose impulses for cruelty and
barbarism motivates them into maiming raping beating or killing
for no substantial motive except to quench empty personal grudges
or simply to satisfy a taste of sadism as well as to gratify misguided
political leader. These are murderers who have been brain washed
into thinking that change of government is criminal hence they defame
their victims as illegal agents of regime change but one day justice
will catch up with them.
Katai also reinforced
and reiterated ZINASU's commitment to the TAKE CHARGE campaign
saying no matter the vilification, brutalities and pain the students
of Zimbabwe shall never accept the products of a flawed process
called COPAC. ZINASU shall forever march untainted and unmoved until
the right to education objective has been attained drawing inspiration
and satisfaction from the justice of our cause as well as waiting
for history to prove its validity.
