Resolutions made at the Harare/Mashonaland female students' summit
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)

On the 5th of November 2010 ZINASU held a female student summit for Harare and Mashonaland provinces at YWCA in Kambuzuma under the theme: "Amplifying the female students' voice in the students' struggle."

The summit was held as per the resolutions made at the ZINASU general council meeting held at Vashandiri training centre in Gweru on 22 May 2010. This summit was also as a result of the research which was going on in the gender and human rights office. The research objective was to find the reason why female student participation in activism is retarding.

The Provincial summit was graced by his Excellency the Ambassador of the Czech Republic; Lucy Mazingi (Director YET); Beatrice Savadye (SAYWHAT Information and Advocacy officer) and 66 female students from Harare and Mashonaland provinces respectively attended this event.

The resolutions that came out of the summit were as follows:

  • The female students agreed to enhance the Fresh Start by January 2011 Campaign through advocating for the reopening of the Halls of Residence at the University of Zimbabwe and the re-introduction of the grants and loan system.
  • A letter must be written to the Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe in request for sanitary wear for female students at institution of higher learning.
  • No to March intake Campaign to be launched at Chinhoyi University of Technology to avoid congestion of students at the Institution.
  • A gender officer to be employed in the secretariat.
  • Issue gender publication at least once per month.
  • To push for a constitution amendment that provides for an equal representation of male and female students in all ZINASU positions of leadership at the next ZINASU congress.

The provincial female summit set to be held in Manicaland Friday 12 November 2010 and Midlands on Sunday the 14th of November 2010.

Meanwhile a gallant and fearless cadre Tinashe Lenin Chisaire the UZ SRA spokesperson was arrested and beaten by University security officers when he approached the Deputy Dean to inquire on the SRC elections at the institution.
