Detained
Masvingo students released
Students Solidarity Trust
October 19, 2010
Six Student
activists Zivanai Muzorodzi, Joshua Chinyere, Godfrey Kurauone,
Arnold Batsirai, Mango Tobias and Zachariah Trivas have been released
after being arrested yesterday when they were seen on the Masvingo
polytechnic campus amidst fears that they were going to lead a demonstration.
They were detained
over night and were only released today after paying admission of
guilt fines to charges of Unlawful gathering with the intention
of causing public disorder. Since yesterday, all institutions had
a high police presence in order to intimidate students. ZINASU
had been encouraging the students from all institutions to boycott
lectures on the 18th of October in a campaign themed 'Start
Afresh Campaign' to lobby for the academic year to be
restarted in protest of the poor learning and hostile environments
the students are being subjected to in institutions of higher learning.
The boycott was to commemorate the World Youth Movement
for Democracy Anniversary. Meanwhile the ZINASU offices were raided
by ununiformed state agents who did not specify what they wanted
but searched the offices and left empty handed, and claimed to be
looking for the ZINASU president Obert Masaraure.
The Student Solidarity Trust Continues to lobby
the freedom of expression to be respected in Zimbabwe. It is imperative
for the Government of National Unity to remain accountable and transparent
and constantly consult with all stake holders for a truly democratic
Zimbabwe to be attained.
