ZINASU gives government an ultimatum
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
October 04, 2010

Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) National Executive Council (NEC) met on Sunday 3 October and resolved that the government of Zimbabwe must usher reforms in the education sector before the 18th of October or the students will indefinitely disengage from institutions of Higher learning until a fresh start is achieved.

The 23 member NEC comprising 11 members elected from National Congress and 12 members two from each of the 6 administrative regions of ZINASU declared the 18th of October as the D-Day when all Institutions of Higher learning shall be forced to close by the voluntary withdrawal of all students. This declaration is in line with the "fresh start by January 2011 campaign" which seeks to achieve a robust and just education sector. The declaration comes barely a week after ZINASU President Obert Masaraure wrote to the President, Prime Minister, Finance Minister, Higher Education Minister, all Vice Chancellors and all Principals in Zimbabwe tabling the demands of students and the action ZINASU is going to embark on.

ZINASU is demanding:

  • The reintroduction of loan and grant system
  • Accountable administrators that will not abuse funds meant to develop our campuses
  • A curricular compatible to the realities of our society
  • The reinstatement of all suspended and expelled students including reparations for these traumatized victims and respect for academic rights and freedoms
  • Professional Vice Chancellors and Principals appointed on the basis of merit not loyalty to Mugabe or Mudenge
  • The opening of the halls of residence at the University of Zimbabwe and the provision of accommodation at other institutions.

Meanwhile ZINASU is demanding the immediate release of the duo of Samson Nxumalo and Archiford Mudzengi who were remanded in custody on Thursday 30 September 2010 to the 16th of October for trumped up charges as the state tries to intimidate students ahead of the mass action.
