ZINASU and ZIHISSU joint position on civil servants' plight
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
September 17, 2010

The Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) together with Zimbabwe High Schools Students Union (ZIHISSU) are concerned by the government's insensitive approach towards addressing the plight of civil servants. It has took more than a year for the government to address the issues of paying decent salaries to its workers.

The civil servants being our parents earning on average US$150 and are expected to pay outrageous amounts of money in the for m of tuition fees. The students of Zimbabwe shall join workers in demanding reasonable salaries and furthermore tuition fees should be in tandem with the average salaries people will be earning at any point in time.

The serious levels of hypocrisy shown today by the union leaders especially of the PTUZ, ZIMTA, TUZ, COLUZ amongst others is a cause for concern. They are now functioning as if they are government officials consultants, it was evidenced by the union leaders being in support of the Minister Prof Mukonoweshuro who gave utterances that are only permissible to pre-school going ages.

The student bodies condones the hypocrisy of the trade union leaders who are taking our parents for granted as if they are clowns. Failure by the trade union leaders to be faithful to their constituencies the government will continuously pass on deaf ears to the plight of civil servants. ZINASU and ZIHISSU urges the civil servants to join hands against the repressive government that does not honour the principle of equal wages for equal work.

The student bodies solemnly warn Tendai Chikowore, Raymond Majongwe, Madovi amongst the other trade union leaders who were present not to equate our parents to cartoons for the consequences and the wrath of students will catch up with them. Our parents cannot be turned into models where they are enticed to march all day long to be told silly excuses of the trade unions demanding commitment from the government.

It has been long when we have demanded commitment from the government which has never been honoured it and it is time for action. Mukonoweshuro continuously refered to the Kariba meeting they had with the trade union leaders who in turn were just nodding their heads in agreement with the insensitive Minister. Judas Iscariots were there during the Biblical times and are still prevalent in the modern day world and Zimbabwe witnessed it this very day(17 September 2010).
