Statement on International Day of Peace
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
September 15, 2010

Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) joins the rest of the nation and the world at large in recognizing the 15th of September the day which coincides with the day when the main political parties in Zimbabwe signed the Global Political Agreement which was a transitional arrangement set to put an end to the political, social and economic turmoil that had and is still engulfing our great nation.

It is now 24 months after the signing of the Inter Party Agreement which ushered in the inclusive government. The word 'peace' is still alien to the people of Zimbabwe as violence is our daily bread. The constitution outreach programme was marred by political violence orchestrated by ZANU-PF's juntas and it is certain that if no proper electoral reforms are put in place there are no chances of having a free and fair election.

Students are continuously being traumatized by the effects of politically motivated suspensions and expulsions. There is no peace when students are being forced to drop-out of institutions of higher learning for the inability to raise the insensitive and outrageous fees being charged. The students of Zimbabwe still dream on having a government that observes and preserves human dignity.

The perpetrators of atrocities have not been prosecuted and brought before the courts. The inclusive government despite having brought hopes to the people of Zimbabwe but has dismally performed in delivering their promises according to the Global Political Agreement. Are we as a people continuously going to groan and mourn in our miseries when the three political parties in the Inclusive Government have forgotten the people?

Domestic violence is a phenomenon identified with the people of Zimbabwe as the cases are incessantly increasing. The government and its enforcing bodies have been very reluctant and lack the will to address the issues of violence against women and children. Majority of the Zimbabwean population have never been accustomed to a peaceful environment since birth and this has resulted to violence castigating down even in to family relations.

ZINASU therefore calls the people of Zimbabwe to fight through any means necessary against violence of any nature and advocate for peace to prevail. It is our duty to build a country that observe peace as a culture and fight fiercely against instigators of violent cal tendencies. Perpetrators of violence have to be brought to book under any circumstances and shall not be granted amnesty for justice to prevail.
