Six
student leaders and activists arrested
Students Solidarity Trust
August 16, 2010
In gross violation
of the rights of students to freedom of association and expression
the police in Gweru have arrested six student activists for allegedly
inciting public violence at the Midlands State University (MSU).
The student leaders who include the ZINASU president Obert Masaraure,
the vice president Tafadzwa Kutya, Zivanai, Sheperd and two other
student leaders were arrested after they had gathered students at
the campus to engage the authorities over the issue of $46 that
the students at MSU are being required to pay to cater for the college's
debt that it incurred in purchasing some generators. The arrested
students are set to appear in court tomorrow and are being represented
by lawyer Masuku Mtandiri.
The Students
Solidarity Trust extends its solidarity to the arrested students
and is seriously concerned with the continued disrespect and violations
of the students' rights by the state police. Concerns are
also raised over the continued exploitation of students in academic
institutions where students are being perpetually milked of their
hard earned money by the ruthless and greedy authorities. It is
high time that the government appreciates that the students of the
nation are not workers hence should stop expropriating money from
them unnecessarily. The government should also respect the right
of students to congregate and deliberate on issues that concern
them and their welfare. Justice and respect must be seen to prevail!
