Students prepare for no vote

Four representatives
per each tertiary institution drawn from the 46 colleges and universities
in Zimbabwe converged to deliberate on issues mainly the national
constitution, national healing, elections and the state of higher
education amongst other things from the 13th-15th
of August 2010 at YWCA in Kambuzuma, Harare.
The invited
speakers namely the Hon. Deputy Minister O. Gutu, Mrs Mutambasere
of the NGO Forum, David Hofisi of ZLHR
and Gideon Chitanga (a ZINASU luminary) presented on students and
the national constitution. The occasion was also graced by the presence
of ZINASU luminaries, NANGO,
Crisis
Coalition, Students'
Solidarity Trust, Youth Alliance for Democracy, Zimbabwe
Poets for Human Rights, Achieve Your Goal Trust and Student
Christian Movement amongst others.
The convention
resolved that the constitution-making process was flawed but the
students as an interest group shall table down their demands which
shall be submitted to COPAC but ZINASU will put more effort on educating
its constituency on civic matters and mobilize students to be registered
voters through voter clubs to be assembled in institutions of higher
learning in preparation for the referendum and the national elections.
In the event the constitution draft document does not carry the
hopes and aspirations of the Zimbabwean students, ZINASU shall mobilize
for a NO vote. ZINASU President Obert Masaraure made it explicitly
clear that the process was flawed and heavily doubts if the draft
document will be people-centred meaning that Zimbabweans should
be geared for a NO vote come referendum.
The continuous
acts of political violence marring the constitution-making process
have proven that there is lack of political will by the three political
parties to have a new supreme law and it was resolved that ZINASU
shall embark on issues of national healing. Students called for
Jabulani Sibanda to be put under house arrest until the constitution-making
process is over and made it clear that they will not be hesitant
to severe ties with MDC-T if it persists to negate their plight
since students were the beacon behind the party's formation.
