6
Bindura student leaders acquitted
Students Solidarity Trust
July 30, 2010
6 student activists have
been acquitted following a ruling by the magistrate Mr Murove who
alluded to the fact that the evidence presented by the state was
not consistent and coherent. The students who had been appearing
at the court religiously following their arrest were being charged
by the state which is accusing them of mobilising students at Bindura
University with the intention to incite public violence on the 14th
of July this year.
In the students'
defence which was represented by Mr Zhawarara from the Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights, the students had gathered to discuss
the pressing issues of examinations as students were being barred
from sitting for their examinations by school authorities. This
has proved that the justice system in Zimbabwe has not collapsed
although there is need for a lot of improvement and transparency
to provide Zimbabweans with an efficient and effective justice system.
Meanwhile two
Bulawayo student activists Jorum Chikwadze and Patrick Danga who
are facing charges under Criminal
Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 for defeating
the course of justice appeared in court yesterday and their trial
was further remanded to 12 August after state witnesses did not
appear for the trial.
