ZINASU leadership still in police custody
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
June 17, 2010
The President
Obert Masaraure, Vice President Tafadzwa Kutya, Gamuchirai Mukura,
Archfod Mudzengi and Trivyn Musokera are held at the Harare Central
Police Station where they are facing charges of contravening the
grotesque Public
Order and Security Act (POSA). The student leaders were arrested
as a result of them having attended to the UZ
students yesterday on issues affecting them at institutional level
and beyond.
The Vice President
was brutally assaulted by members of the campus security personnel
and it is improper for the police to continuously keep him in their
custody without getting medical attention. The student leaders are
expected to appear before a Harare Provincial Magistrates'
Court tomorrow. The UZ SRA Vice-Chairperson Malvern Hobwana was
detained by the campus security yesterday for almost 5 hours interrogating
the student leader. Members of ZRP are expected to pick up the student
leader today for further questioning on the events that took place
yesterday at UZ main campus.
Meanwhile,
Chinhoyi University of Technology closed last week, despite having
over 200 students still on campus as they commenced lectures which
had no teaching personnel. These students will certainly incur extra
expenses in terms of food and rentals for those who stay off-campus.
Tawanda Choto a Second year student said, 'This move is necessary
for us to complete this level but it has strained our parents as
they have to surpass what they had budgeted for this semester.'
The ZINASU
weekly newsletter 'The Students Vuvuzela' is now available,
with the first edition having already been distributed to all the
six administrative regions of the Union this week. The soft copy
shall be available as soon ZINASU's website construction is
completed. The Editorial team provided for by the organization's
constitutional provisions shall be set up, after the vetting process
has been concluded.
