  • SCMZ statement on the 2010 National Youth Camp: Introducing the new National Executive Committee
Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe (SCMZ)
    May 17, 2010

The Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe (SCMZ) successfully held its traditional National Youth Camp at Rest Haven Retreat Centre in Domboshava from the 14th to the 16th of May 2010 under the theme drawn from the Bible verse, "If my people who are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear them from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land", 2 Chronicles 7:14.

Noting that the nation is coming from a dark era where ruthless tactics were employed to seek political relevance and to acquire, maintain and retain a solid grip on political superiority, the theme came as an awakening call to the nation that as we move in the direction of national healing and reconciliation, the right prescription for lasting and sustainable healing comes from the Lord. But first and foremost we need to be called by his name, humble ourselves, pray, seek God`s face and desist from our wicked ways then the Lord will heal our nation. It also came as an exhortation to SCMers to make some introspections in their lives and return to a life beyond reproach and integrity based on the Biblical principles and values.

The camp was also graced by other youth formations and ecumenical partners such as the Student Solidarity Trust (SST), Youth Agenda, National Movement for Catholic Students (NMCS), Young Women Christian Association (YWCA), Zimbabwe Young Christian Students (ZYCS), Zimbabwe National Pastors Conference (ZNPC), Youth Initiative for Democracy (YIDEZ), Ecumenical Support Services (ESS), Christian Alliance, Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), Campus Sustained Dialogue Network, and Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA), among others. We salute your selfless sacrifices and unwavering commitment to ensure that the camp was a resounding success.

As we celebrate and acknowledge our successes to date, we salute and feel indebted to the outgoing National Executive composed of Lawrence Mashungu (Chairperson), Langelihle Manyani (Vice Chairperson), Prosper Munatsi (General Secretary), Millicent Nhutsve (Treasurer), Matsiliso Moyo (Gender Secretary), Brian Matanda (Senior Friends Secretary), SCMZ Membership, Senior Friends, the Advisory Board as well as the Secretariat for their courage and continued perseverance. We also applaud our many partners both nationally and internationally for they gave us energy through their prayers to carry on in spite of the trying times. As the outgoing Executive we are confident that SCMZ will continue to grow and play a pivotal role in the promotion of the young people`s faith without wavering from our guiding Biblical principles as an ecumenical Institution for the Lord says I will bless the works of the righteous.

We also wish to take this opportunity to introduce and congratulate the new National Executive Committee composed as follows:

National Chairperson - Mark Mangwiro (National University of Science and Technology)

Vice Chairperson - Chipo Mukungurutse (Midlands State University)

General Secretary - Edgar Mavhinga (University of Zimbabwe)

National Treasurer - Ivy Murwisi (Masvingo Polytechnic)

We humbly call and appeal to all progressive youth movements, individuals and partners to continue supporting and praying for the incumbent executive.
