Contravention of students' rights looms
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 11, 2010

The ZINASU Secretary General Joshua Chinyere, Spokesperson Grant Tabvurei, Wisdom Mgagara University of Zimbabwe activist and twenty-five other students attended court today(11 May 2010) at the Bindura Magistrate's Court. They are facing charges of inciting public violence and contravening POSA on the 14TH of January 2010. The lawyer who is supposed to handle the case Tawanda Zhuwarara from ZLHR failed to turn up for the second time but had a replacement today in the form of Jamela.

The President Obert Masaraure expressed apprehension on the manner in which ZLHR is operating and avowed that it is not proper for the lawyer to inform the accused students on the trial day that he will be absent for the trial. He however expressed optimism that things will turn out for the best as the trial date has been deferred to the 18th of this month.

Bindura University of Science Education has ordered lecturers not to mark students' assignments who have not paid the full amount of fees, this is emulation of the Nyagura malevolence administration. Levy announced through the Herald on Saturday that door of the oldest tertiary institution will not be opened to the poor (those with arrears).

The duo of the President and Secretary General have instructed the Student Representative Council led by Paul Dakarai to approach the administration concerning the matter and should report to the national office on Monday the 17th of May without fail. The National Executive Council shall descend on the Mudenge administration that has managed to achieve nothing since the formation of the Inclusive Government.

Meanwhile, the National Executive Council has managed to freeze UNION's assets that where at the Crisis Coalition in advance of securing offices and shall be given an update from the same organisation on the issue of the finances of ZINASU. As far as the leadership is concerned UNION funds were used for the 29 March demonstrations only and the remainder is to be availed to the organization without fail since we have severed administrative ties with the Coalition.

Issues beyond this generation of student leaders have been swept under the carpet but those as from January up to the present day shall be sincerely looked into. If there are any culprits who tempered around with the UNION's property and funds as from January up to the present day shall not be permissible to go scot free.
