ZINASU President and Spokesperson picked up by UZ campus security guards
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) (Chinyere)
April 12, 2010

The ZINASU President, Joshua Chinyere and the Spokesperson, Wisdom Mgagara have been picked up by the University of Zimbabwe campus security guards this morning over unclear circumstances. Cde Chinyere was picked up around 11am at the campus law library while Cde Mgagara was picked up around 11.45am at the School of Social Work campus in town where he was writing an examination and taken to the UZ control room.

The move might be linked up to the demonstration that took place on 29 March 2010 organized by ZINASU showing its disgruntlement over the failure by the three principals of the GPA to fully implement the agreement and the unaffordability of education in Zimbabwe vis a vis the continued victimization of student leaders. It might also be possible that this might be connected to the recent announcement by the ZINASU President in a statement that all students from all colleges, the University of Zimbabwe included should be allowed to write their end of semester/ term examinations whether or not they paid their tuition fees. This might have sparked the UZ Vice Chancellor to call for the arrest of the student leaders as history saves us well that Professor Nyagura is intolerant to dissenting voices and will try by all means possible to suppress the students' rights to freedom of expression, movement, association and speech. It will not be shocking if the two are issued with suspension letters or even expulsions for defending academic freedoms in Zimbabwe.

College authorities and state apparatus have been on a rampage of harassing and victimizing students with many students getting arrested, beaten, suspended or even expelled for protesting against unaffordability of education in 2010 alone. The ZINASU Coordinator Mfundo Mlilo has gone to the UZ control room to ascertain the reasons for the arrests. The Union urges all students to be resilent and continue fighting for their right to quality and affordable education until a level of normalcy returns in the education fratenity.
