Students
are still being barred from colleges and universities
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
(Mugwadi)
April 06, 2010
The Minister
of Higher and Tertiary Education Stan Mudenge is on record saying
no student shall be barred from college or university for failing
to pay tuition fees. ZINASU dismisses this as a deliberate and well
calculated subversion of the truth designed to appease students
into unfound docility. Thousands of students in polytechnic and
teacher's colleges are still failing to access their 2009
examination results.
On Monday colleges commenced
a new term, but college authorities in particular at Harare, Mutare,
Masvingo and Kwekwe polytechnic colleges students who have not paid
their tuition fees are being barred from lecturers. The Midlands
State University recently threatened to bar all students who are
yet to pay their tuition fees from sitting for their end of semester
examinations.
In his May Day speech
the Zimbabwe National Students Union President Tafadzwa Mugwadi
gave the government an ultimatum of twenty-one days to deal with
the fees issue. Prime Minister Tsvangirai equally promised to look
into the fees crisis.
ZINASU orders Minister
Mudenge to desist from making utterances which are not in tandem
with reality. Instead of searching for alternatives he aggravates
our plight and misery by his statements. ZINASU dismisses government
excuses on why it fails to subsidize our education system when it
is able to fund the students studying at Fort hare and other universities
in South Africa.ZINASU also believes the crisis in the education
sector now reaching its zenith under the inclusive government emanates
from misplacement and misdirection of priorities and resources by
the government and that has to change.
ZINASU urges the Prime
Minister to stick to his words realizing the importance of time
in this critical issue.
