ZINASU
President released
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
(Chinyere)
March 31, 2010
The ZINASU President and 11 other student activists
have finally been released....
The ZINASU President, Joshua Chinyere and 12 other
students who were arrested for leading a demonstration in Harare
on the 29th of March 2010 have finally been released on USD20 bail
each. The students were represented by Mr Zhwarara a lawyer with
the ZLHR. They were charged with public nuisance. The arrested students
were in police custody for more than 48 hours and appeared at the
Rotten Row Magistrate Court at 2:30pm today. They were further remanded
to 15 April 2010.
Gweru
Police in Gweru are looking for the ZINASU Education
and Research Officer, Artwell Chidya who was leading the protest
in Gweru on the 29th of March. The police claim that the students
did not use the route that they had given them and hence Cde Chidya
should be charged for contravening an order given to him on the
26th of March 2010 by the police. These charges are politically
motivated and baseless as the police are just frustrated as they
thought the demonstration would flop. The protest was highly attended
with 200 students participating from colleges in and around the
Midlands province.
ZINASU will not take lightly the victimisation of
students by state apparatus and will make efforts to meet the three
principals in the Inclusive Government seeking an explanation as
to why cases of human rights violations continue to resurface considering
that it is the duty and responsibility of them to guarantee freedom
of expression, movement, association and speech.
Students have vowed to continue with the protests
until a level of normalcy prevails in the education sector.
