Police in a bid to stop students' protests
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
(Chinyere)
March 29, 2010
ZINASU
has vowed to continue with the nationwide demonstrations today
Police are
on a rampant to stop the scheduled ZINASU demonstrations which are
expected to take place this afternoon. The demonstrations will be
staged under the theme "Igniting students Voices My Vote Spoke
March 29 Elections". The students are demanding affordable
and quality education, the reintroduction of the grant/loan system,
the full implementation of the GPA
and an end to students' victimization by college authorities
and state apparatus.
The protests
will take place in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru and Masvingo but the
police have only issued out police clearances to Gweru and Masvingo
provinces. The refusal by the police to sanction these protests
in the two largest cities is a political gimmick to silence the
students' populace. Students have vowed to continue with the
demonstrations.
ZINASU has
filed an urgent high court chamber application to bar the police
from disrupting the demonstrations and the application is being
presided over by Justice Yunus Omerjee.
Provincial
Updates
Harare
The police have already set camp at Belvedere Teachers College,
where they are blocking students from leaving college premises in
a bid to stop them from attending the demonstration in Harare but
the students are vowing to attend the protests. The Union will hand
over a petition to the three principals of the Inclusive Government.
Bulawayo
The ZINASU Regional Officer for Bulawayo, Melissa Ndlovu has been
picked up by police this morning around 7 a.m. She is part of the
organising team and her arrest is an attempt by the police to scare
away students from protesting against the poor education delivery
system in Zimbabwe and the failure by the three main political players
to agree on the full implementation of the Global Political Agreement.
