Tafadzwa
"Tu-boy" Mugwadi arrested
The Zimbabwe
National Students Union [ZINASU] President Tafadzwa "Tu-boy"
Mugwadi was arrested yesterday the 29th of March 2010 at Harare
Polytechnic College together with the ZINASU Education and Research
secretary Bastinos Kundishora and University
of Zimbabwe student leader Alias Chitombo .The three were arrested
for being suspected of having distributed the ZINASU-Weekly and
are being held at Harare Central Police station.
President Mugwadi
and his delegation had gone to Harare Polytechnic College to meet
students from various polytechnic colleges who had gathered for
their annual Tertiary Education Sporting Association (TESA) games
which were being held at Harare Polytechnic College.
Earlier during
the day President Mugwadi had been confronted by three men who claimed
to be state security agents and threatened him with unspecified
action for publishing the ZINASU Weekly and distributing it at Harare
Polytechnic College an institution they claimed was a no go area
for ZINASU.
ZINASU decries
the arrest as an attempt to intimidate and cow the student leaders
and all dissenting voices by the corrupt Harare Polytechnic College
administration with the misplaced hope of covering its corrupt practices.
In the interest of academic freedom and democracy, ZINASU demands
the immediate release of President Mugwadi and his colleagues. We
call upon all pro-democratic Zimbabweans to insist on the release
of the student activists and to pressure the Zimbabwe government
to guarantee that the detained will not be tortured.
The revolution is under trial we however remain firm and resolute
in defending the rights of students!
