ZINASU President Meets Parliamentary Portfolio on Higher Education
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
(Chinyere)
March 22, 2010
The ZINASU President,
Joshua Chinyere today, 22 March 2010 met with the Parliamentary
Portfolio on Higher and Tertiary Education to present a paper on
the effects of the Government, Cadetship programme on students.
The cadetship programme
introduced by Government in 2006 has done little in assisting students
in institutions of higher learning. The scheme was introduced after
the Government put to hold the grant/loan system which used to cushion
students in tertiary institutions through paying for their tuition
fees. The cadetship scheme assisted less than 7% of the total number
of intended beneficiaries. The scheme was shroud with secrecy since
its inception and contains clauses which are restrictive to students.
The Parliamentary Portfolio
documented the challenges which will be used in trying to improve
the education sector in Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe
Youth council meets stakeholders
The National Youth Council
held an all stakeholders meeting on Friday, 19 March 2010 at Great
Zimbabwe, Masvingo. The meeting discussed among other issues, the
need to come up with what stakeholders want to be incorporated in
the youth council in order to make it effective and non partisan.
The ZINASU President
made a presentation on the challenges facing the education sector.
He highlighted the failure of the Government to fully fund tertiary
education, the flouting of unqualified teaching personnel in many
colleges, the continued victimization of students activists in many
institutions by college authorities and state apparatus and the
general decay of infrastructure in colleges.
Other stakeholders also
highlighted the need to ensure the Council is an all inclusive apolitical
body that genuinely addresses the needs of youth without discrimination
on the grounds of political affiliation, age or gender.
Some of the major issues
discussed included:
- The crafting of an
independent National Youth Policy
- A consensus was reached
that the Minister of Youth should not be given the jurisdiction
to appoint board members as he or she is a symbol of a certain
political party.
Some of the
youths formations present included, YET, YAD, Zimbabwe Arts GROUP,
Allied Youth for Justice, and Youth in Mining, Zimbabwe Congress
of Students Union among other organizations.
