ZINASU leaders meet NCA chairman Dr. Lovemore Madhuku
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
(Chinyere)
March 13, 2010
The leadership
of ZINASU yesterday, 10 March 2010 met with the Chairperson of NCA
Dr Lovemore Madhuku at his offices over assaults on its leadership.
The delegation was led by ZINASU President Joshua Chinyere and included
Secretary General Grant Tabvurei, National Spokesperson Wisdom Mgagara,
Nyasha Fasiteri the Gender Secretary and ZINASU National Coordinator,
Mfundo Mlilo. Three members of the ZINASU executive were attacked
on Tuesday 9 March in Harare by a group of thugs operating from
the NCA calling itself ZINASU.
Issues under
discussion
1. Violent
behaviour
The President briefed
the NCA leader on how the group housed at NCA had turned violent
and was on a rampage of savagely beating students and ZINASU leaders.
He further detailed the various incidents including e-mails that
seek to denigrate the personality and characters of various individuals
associated with ZINASU. Dr Madhuku stated that the NCA does not
condone violence and would immediately convene a meeting with these
individuals and ensure that all violent behaviour cease forthwith.
Dr Madhuku further stated that the issue will be taken up with its
taskforce for discussion. The Union condemns any form of violence
against anyone.
2. Closure
of NCA based offices
ZINASU demanded that
the offices that were opened at NCA purportedly to be Union offices
should immediately be closed as they had continued to confuse students
and were a base for nefarious and destabilising activities to the
work of ZINASU. The activities organised from this office have become
an albatross to the growth and image of the institution. Dr Madhuku
stated that the offices had been opened at the request of deposed
ZINASU leader, Clever Bere as a temporary base. He stated that they
had opened the offices to what he termed "protecting Clever
Bere". The delegation detailed how Clever Bere had violated
institution procedures and process and abused his office leading
to the ZINASU membership recalling him. The NCA protected an illegitimate
leader leading to the creating of a parallel structure which has
continued to erode the image of ZINASU. The NCA leader refused to
close the office.
3. Illicit
financial and material support
The delegation informed
Dr Madhuku that the financial and material support they were giving
to the outfit housed at their offices had been used to instigate
violence and destabilise the Union. The NCA was thus directly and
indirectly liable of the problems caused by these students hence
should stop forthwith the disbursement of the funds. Dr Madhuku
stated that he will not stop issuing the support as the group of
thugs had a secretariat to pay.
The meeting was unfruitful
for the major issues were not resolved only for the cessation of
the use of violence that he pledged will be dealt with by Friday
12 March 2010.
ZINASU expects the NCA
to unequivocally dissociate themselves from violent activities and
to stop any direct or indirect support to individuals who seek to
undermine the image and integrity of the Union. It was generally
agreed in the meeting that the NCA and ZINASU must continue to work
together despite differences over the current constitution making
process.
ZINASU is committed
to working with all pro democracy movements that do not covertly
or overtly promote violence and are willing to respect the integrity
and autonomy of our institution. We expect the NCA to take us seriously
failure of which the students of Zimbabwe shall decide the way forward
at the General Council to convene at the end of this month. The
General Council is the highest decision making board between the
Congresses which are held bi-annually.
