ZINASU
condemns attack on NEC members at Mai Tsvangirai memorial rally
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
(Mugwadi)
March 06, 2010
ZINASU condemns in the
strongest terms the attack on the National Executive Council members
today at the memorial rally of Amai Susan Tsvangirai by MDC thugs.
The ZINASU President
Tafadzwa Twoboy Mugwadi today was barred from giving a solidarity
speech by the MDC youths at the memorial of Amai Susan Tsvangirai
rally. Shortly after being barred by these youths there was rampant
beating of the NEC members of ZINASU by a group of MDC youths who
were clearly mobilised by the individuals working in the Prime Minister's
office, in an apparently rehearsed incident. The youths were accusing
the student leaders of planning to protest at the memorial rally.
The accusations were baseless.
The Secretary General
Kurai Hoyi, Legal Affairs Secretary Archiford Mudzengi, the National
Treasurer Tafadzwa Kutya sustained serious injuries. The student
leaders are currently receiving medical attention at the Avenues
clinic.
The MDC and in particular
the office of its President and that of the Prime Minister have
been deliberately fanning divisions in the students union, threatening
and assaulting student leaders in a typical ZANU PF culture.
ZINASU would like to
warn the MDC, the Prime Minister, his surrogates Ian Makone, Denis
Murira and Jacob Mafume of the serious consequences of such treatment
of students on the party. If the MDC is declaring war on ZINASU
they should come out clear and ZINASU is ready for the fight to
protect the legacy and the broader student fraternity aspirations
of Zimbabwe. These attacks on student leaders by these hired-misguided
MDC thugs have happened in the past and have gone unattended to
by the party leadership.
These and many
other deplorable actions by MDC leaders, activists and employees
clearly compromises the credentials of the MDC as a real democratic
alternative to ZANU PF.
ZINASU demands an apology
and an explanation from the MDC President Morgan Tsvangirai. Such
undemocratic practices and intolerance is not expected from a party
that purports to be pursuing a struggle for democratic change. It
is a know fact that the MDC and the Prime Minister's office have
played an active role in dividing the students union.
