ZINASU
7th bi-annual congress update
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
(Mugwadi)
February 01, 2010
The Zimbabwe National
Students Union (ZINASU) successfully held its historic 7th Bi-Annual
Congress at Chinhoyi University of Technology from the 29th to 31st
of January 2010 under the theme 'Defining and Entrenching
a new political culture in pursuit of the students Revolution.'
It is a culture premised
on a set of revolutionary principles, of selfless determination
to execute our generational struggle for a prosperous and peaceful
democratic Zimbabwe that respects academic rights as fundamental
human rights. The politics of the land has changed dramatically
and as such we have to re-organise ourselves on this terrain. In
this regard, the Congress, among other issues, debated robustly
on the grievances of the students, the people of Zimbabwe and the
world at large.
The congress made amendments
to the ZINASU constitution which saw the establishment of the new
post of the deputy secretary general and the expansion of the National
Executive Council so that it becomes more representative of the
union's broader constituency. The National Executive Council
will total to 23 after the inclusion of three Provincial Executive
members from each province (a full text of the resolutions will
be circulated soon).
The congress
was graced by our alliance partners' i.e. the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) represented by its President
Lovemore Matombo, National
Chairperson of the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), Dr
Lovemore Madhuku as well as regional partners from the SADC region
notably the Lesotho Union of Students Leadership and the Young Communist
League of South Africa who all gave messages of solidarity.
Other youth
formations who attended the gathering included the, the Students
Solidarity Trust (SST), Zimbabwe High School Students Union
(ZIHISSU), the Zimbabwe Youth Forum and former students' leaders.
We wish to take this
opportunity to thank the following for making our congress a success;
Masimba Nyamanhindi and
the Student Solidarity Trust for funding the congress. We salute
Mr. Nyamanhindi's selfless sacrifice and unwavering commitment
to ensure that the congress was a reality and a resounding success.
We could not have done it if he had not intervened, we greatly appreciate
and hope this gesture will continue.
Mr Jimmy Wilford
former ZINASU Treasurer and SAYWHAT
Coordinator for assisting with fuel that was used to ferry comrades
to and from the congress, once again we salute these two revolutionaries.
We also extend our gratitude
to the ZINASU Advisory Board particularly the Chairperson Takura
Zhangazha, Vice Hopewell Gumbo and Secretary Madock Chivasa for
the support they rendered for the past two years.
Hats off to members of
the media, other civic groups, and all the individuals who helped
but requested anonymity.
Many thanks also go to
the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) SRC Leadership especially
its President Cde Choose Kasongo, the CUT Vice Chancellor Professor
