ZINASU
intervenes to address near-catastrophe situation at UZ as the fascist
Nyagura-led UZ administration capitulates
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
December 03, 2009
The University
of Zimbabwe administration was today forced into capitulation
as students demanded access to the examination room for all students
despite failure to pay the apparently exorbitant fees.
The University Deputy
Registrar Mrs. Takawira had issued a statement yesterday 2 December
threatening that all students who had not paid fees in full won't
be allowed into the exams. The move impelled swift intervention
by the ZINASU leadership who addressed scores of students who had
been denied access to the examination room.
The revolutionary
team led by ZINASU National Secretary for Education and Research
Obert Masaraure and also comprising UZ students activists Tafadzwa
Twoboy Mugwadi, Chamunorwa Madiridze, Great Zimbabwe University
student leader Samuel Gwenzi, Grant Tabvurei (NUST)
took turns to address the students at the campus main library. It
was after this meeting that the University Registrar Mr Chevo hurriedly
held an urgent meeting with the Dean of Students, Deans of all faculties
at the university before they finally agreed to allow all students
to sit for their examinations whether they paid fees or not.
ZINASU commends the revolutionary
students at the UZ who stood firm and steadfast in fighting injustice.
The provocative move by the fascist, heartless and moribund Nyagura
administration must be condemned in the strongest of terms. Authorities
must not provoke students for students united and with resolve will
always fight any form of oppression, provocation and repression.
How stupid was the UZ administration's intention. How dare
they expect students to sit down idly and cowardly when confronted
with such an injustice? After struggling for over three months,
authorities just expected students to abide by such an inhumane
injustice.
ZINASU will never allow
such apartheid policies where the disadvantaged sons and daughters
of the struggling masses are denied access to education and automatically
subjected to an uncertain future.
The struggle to ensure
all students write exams have been won as a result of the unity
and sacrifice of all students; we urge all the students to show
the same when it come to accessing results. If we sit for the exams,
we expect to get results.
The UZ exam victory is
a clear sign of the power of effective political organizing. We
urge the students of this country, from colleges to universities,
primary schools to high schools to unite with the working class
people in demanding access to basic services.
The union reaffirms its
demand that it is the prerogative of the state to fund our education.
