10
students released, while four remain in custody
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
August 06, 2009
Ten student
activists who had been detained
by campus security personnel at the University
of Zimbabwe security control room on 4 August 2009 were released
yesterday and the other four were handed over to Avondale Police
Station where they remain in custody.
The remaining four include
militant student leader and President of ZINASU, Clever Bere, Harare
Polytechnic student leader Kudakwashe Chakabva, ZINASU General Councilor
and Zimbabwe School of Mines SRC President Archieford Mudzengi and
Brian Ruas Ndoro a political science student at the University of
Zimbabwe.
Yesterday Professor Levy
Nyagura allegedly hurled insults at the ZINASU President accusing
him of promoting terrorism at the University, in a move that left
onlookers shell-shocked. Students who witnessed the encounter at
the control room expressed shock at the apparent lack of maturity
exhibited by Professor Nyagura's conduct a move that will
certainly not help the beleaguered professor's fast dwindling
stature and respect within the student fraternity.
The lawyer representing
the four, Jeremiah Bamu said that there are no clear charges being
preferred against the detained students as yet although he observed
that the four are mostly likely to be charged disorderly conduct
in a public place. Mr Bamu also indicated that there was a strong
likelihood of the four student leaders being transferred to Harare
Central Police Station during the course of the day.
