  • No to continued persecution of MDC legislators under the guise of law
Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe (SCMZ)
    July 30, 2009

The Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe (SCMZ) notes with great concern efforts being made by the ZANU PF to cripple the MDC through deliberate selective application of the law by the unpopular ZANU PF devotee, Attorney General Tomana. To date more than eight MDC legislators have been either convicted or are facing trial for various unfounded and fabricated allegations, being peddled by ZANU PF machinists. Recently, of most disturbing ZANU PF machinations is of the Deputy Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment, Thamsanqa Mahlangu who has been allegedly charged for conniving with two Hwange women to steal a cell phone belonging to the self proclaimed war veterans leader Joseph Chinotimba at the launch of the National Vision 2040 at the Rainbow Towers on July 23 2009. As the Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe we do not condone such evil and heinous ploy orchestrated by the ZANU PF to stifle the struggle for a just and democratic Zimbabwe. We have come a long way and the people of Zimbabwe have suffered for too long and never shall our determination for a free and democratic nation be derailed by such pathetic immature party- politicking gambits.

If the so-called Attorney General is so eager to genuinely play his duty (as testified by the continued prosecution of MDC legislators), why then was he silent and is still silent on the alleged ZANU PF perpetrators of violence in the run-up to last year`s June 27 Presidential run-off? There are a number of alleged cases of how people were hurt, killed, displaced and some raped, yet to date nothing has been done to effect the arrested of the perpetrators, who are mostly ZANU PF. Torture bases were established in communities for the purpose of punishing those perceived to be supporting the MDC and law enforcement organisations like the police were aware of the existence of these torture bases but they never intervened. Worse more, those who were operating the bases were known to the communities and they are still within the communities and still nothing has been done for justice to take its course.

As the Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe, we would like to urge all youth and other progressive movements to make a concerted voice in condemning such manipulation of the law and abuse of office by the Attorney General, and continue to fight for the democratisation of Zimbabwe. "Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with them: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings", Isaiah 3:10
