Mutare Polytechnic to elect new students' leadership
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
June 10, 2009

Mutare

Mutare Polytechnic College will be conducting Student Representative Council elections (SRC) on the 12th of June 2009. The ZINASU Vice President Brilliant Dube will lead a delegation to observe the polls. The college opened on the 4th of May for the second term with less than 50% of the students failing to return to college due to failure to pay tuition fees. The fees are ranging from USD345 to USD600 per term. Students at the institution are being faced by accommodation challenges due to the high accommodation fees and groceries being charged by the administration.

Masvingo

25 Great Zimbabwe University students appeared in court on the 8th of June 2009 on charges of public violence after a peaceful demonstration held on the 22nd of April at the institution. 17 students were acquitted and the remaining 8 are set to appear in court today,10 June 2009. ZINASU secretary for Legal and Social Welfare Courage Ngwarai also appeared in the same court on charges of destruction to property. He was further remanded to the 24th of June 2009 because the state requested more time to prepare for the trial.

Bindura

Students at Bindura University of Education (BUSE) formed an all inclusive Student Representative Council. The forming of the coalition SRC was as a result of the failure by the administration to hold these elections last year in October due to an industrial action by lecturers.

The inclusive SRC will be in office till the end of the semester in August this year, normal SRC elections will be held next semester, in October 2009 and their term of office will run up to August 2010.

They were 3 coalitions contesting for the SRC and it was out of those 3 that an inclusive SRC was formed, with each coalition bringing in 3 members each and the 10th member was appointed by consensus of the group.
