HEXCO/ZIMSEC exam scandals
Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)
June 07, 2009

ZINASU is dismayed by the late release of last year's examination results conducted by the Higher Education Examination Council (HEXCO). ZINASU questions the way HEXCO ran the November 2008 examinations. The delay in the release of the results is as disturbing as it compromises the credibility of the results due to an array of issues that rocked the examination process namely:

  • Numerous cases of paper leakages
  • Incessant postponement of writing dates
  • Issuance of wrong papers
  • Lecturer`s strikes which led to students not receiving full tuition

The delay in the release of results has greatly affected the 2009 academic calendar for students in polytechnic colleges.

It is in this light that the union demands the immediate restructuring of HEXCO and ZIMSEC to improve their human and financial capacity to conduct examinations in future.

University of Zimbabwe

The student union is concerned about the slow progress towards the reopening of the institution. The government is showing minimal commitment in its efforts in moving towards reopening the institution.

The Professor Levi Nyagura led administration has dismally failed. This failure has been characterized and is evidenced by the unmitigated dilapidated infrastructure i.e. lecturer rooms, halls of residence, shortage of qualified lecturers, remuneration etc.

He is the worst Vice Chancellor ever to head the institution since its inception in 1957.

In 2000, Professor Nyagura was involved in a high level corruption and embezzlement case when he flouted procurement and financial regulations in the purchase of curtains for over $11 million for the halls of residence and common rooms.

On the 9th of 2007, Nyagura closed the university halls of residence and evicted more than 5000 students only two weeks before the examinations rendering all the students homeless.

To date Nyagura has suspended over 60 student activists since his inception as Vice Chancellor in 2003.

It is in this light that the Union is convinced that the continued closure of the university is more complex than merely claiming that the university closure has continued on account of water problems.

Nyagura must go!

To us in the students union, we will judge the success or failure of the government through its ability to address the challenges and problems confronting the education sector. As of now, we can confidently and authoritatively say the government of the day has failed.
