Three University
of Zimbabwe (UZ) students appeared before a Harare magistrate
yesterday on charges of public violence. The charges arose after
university of Zimbabwe students demonstrated against high tuition
fees on the 5th of February. More than eighty students were arrested
and the three remained in custody as ring leaders. The demonstration
was part of the National Campaign Against the Dollarization of Education
in Zimbabwe (NACADEZ). The three Vitalis Mudzonga, Tawanda Katsuro
and Justice Chikanya who are out on bail appeared in court on routine
remand hearing. They will appear again on the 2nd of June when the
magistrate is set to make a ruling on their application for refusal
of remand.
On a related
issue, five National
University of Science and Technology (NUST) students appeared
before a Bulawayo magistrate on the 20th of May facing charges of
causing public violence and breach of peace. The charges arose when
the five, Sheunesu Nyoni, Samson Nxumalo, Brian Mutisi, Melusi Hlabano
and Archieford Mudzengi participated in a demonstration organized
by the National
Constitutional Assembly (NCA). The demonstration was organized
to put pressure for a new people driven democratic constitution.
They are set to appear in court on 27 May for judgment.
Meanwhile the
ZINASU
Legal and Academic Affairs Secretary, Courage Ngwarai appeared before
a Masvingo magistrate on charges of malicious damage to property
and criminal nuisance. The case was further remanded to 27 May for
malicious damage to property and 17 June for criminal nuisance charges.
