ZINASU
holds consultative meeting in Masvingo
Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU)
May 13, 2009
ZINASU held
a students' consultative meeting in Masvingo on the 12th of
May 2009. 120 students from, Great Zimbabwe University, Masvingo
Polytechnic College and Masvingo Teachers college attended the meeting.
The students gathered to discuss issues affecting them in their
respective institutions and to come up with solutions.
The Vice-President
of ZINASU, Brilliant Dube chaired the meeting and the President
of the Progressive
Teachers Union in Zimbabwe, Mr. Takavafira Zhou and Bright Kutya
a student from GZU were the speakers. The meeting was premised on
the sad reality that the education sector has seen no meaningful
development since the formation of the inclusive government. Students
raised the following problems:
- Tuition
fees are still unaffordable(they range from USD150-USD600)
- College
authorities are not allowing students who fail to pay to sit for
examinations.
- The employing
of under qualified lecturers/recent graduates
- No provision
of transport for students who leave far from campus
- The libraries
are inadequately stocked
- Lack of
information technology
- The suspension
of students without a displinary hearing
- There are
no legitimately elected Student Representatives in tertiary institution
The students
came up with recommendations on how to tackle some of the problems
in their institutions:
- Fees must
be further reduced to range fromUSD 50-USD 150; these fees will
be afforded by the majority of students.
- Petition
must be written to the Minister of Higher Education Dr Stan Mudenge,
requesting him to urgently give a direction to GZU and Masvingo
Poly-technic authorities to allow all students to sit for examinations
commencing on Monday 18 May 2009.
- Institutions
should relax their terms of payment of the fees
- Present
the Prime Minister with a list of their problems during a meeting
to be held in Masvingo on Sunday (17 May 2009)
ZINASU will
be meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister Professor Arthur Mutambara
to discus issues affecting students in tertiary institutions countrywide.
ZINASU will be sending delegations around the country to consult
students on the problems they are encountering; these will provide
a framework for the All Stakeholders Conference on Education to
be convened by ZINASU.
